Rosemary Kennedy, a sister of
John F. Kennedy, was born mentally retarded and lived most of her life in a Wisconsin institution after undergoing a lobotomy. She died Friday, January 7, 2005. She was 86.
The third child and first daughter of
Joseph and
Rose Kennedy, born a year after future
President John Kennedy,
Rosemary had been a resident since 1943 at St. Coletta near
Jefferson, Wisconsin. She died at that hospital with her brother,
Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, and her sisters at her side.
Rosemary Kennedy's condition inspired her younger sister,
Eunice Kennedy Shriver, to found the
Special Olympics for mentally disabled athletes.
