This first-of-its-kind audio pronunciation website has been online since mid-2005, long before the imitators. That’s more than a decade and a half! Since then, there have been many additions, edits, and revisions to this free resource, and there will likely be more in the future.
The idea for MissPronouncer came when I struggled to find accurate pronunciations of Wisconsin locations while prepping for the early morning radio newscasts. This was especially true when reading wire copy about bad weather in remote parts of the state. Nobody was around with whom I could confer at 4:00 in the morning and I certainly couldn’t pick up the phone to call someone at that ungodly hour. Something had to be done. An idea was born. No more mispronouncing Wisconsin locations.
Why are some of the names in our state so difficult to pronounce? Wisconsin is the English spelling of Ouisconsin. That’s the French version of Meskonsing after some sort of typo of the Indian name for the river that runs through the center of the state. So yeah.
Your positive comments, productive suggestions, and anecdotal stories are always welcome. Thanks for visiting. Tell your friends. On Wisconsin!
